I’ve posted about my fruit bowl many times before. Brett Hamlyn gave me this handmade fruit bowl, as a Yule gift, back in 2016. One of my treasures. I’ve posted pictures of it full of winter, spring and summer harvests of fruit, and here it is, mid Spring, full again. (It actually had a nice little bowl of strawberries in it too, from the north wall garden, and a bowl of mulberries, but we ate them).
These last three are extra special cos this is not harvest from our 30 year old orchard, but harvest from our two and a half year old suburban permaculture retrofit. So far we’ve harvested pawpaws, bananas, mulberries and strawberries in spring, lemons, pawpaws, avocados and the last of the passionfruit and tamarillos in winter, dragonfruit, bulk passionfruit and guavas in autumn, figs, tamarillos and both yellow and purple passionfruit in summer, all in feed the neighbours quantities.
But I am looking forward to summer and autumn this year, when we should get the first harvest from many of the trees – apples, peaches, lychees, oranges, mangoes, pineapples, mandarins, limes, feijoas, blackberries, raspberries, Davidson plums, and gramichamas are all flowering. Then there’s kiwi fruit, grapes, low chill cherries, japoticabas, custard apples, pomegranite, olives, macadamia nuts, panama berries and carabolas not flowering yet but with luck next year. It’s astonishing the amount you can fit in a suburban block with pruning, and a bit of attention to aspect and soil fertility.
And I reckon I can still fit in a couple more. What have I missed?
